Video Invitational - Video in tutti i sensi
12 January 2006 - 21 January 2006
Viafarini, Milan, IT
The project is a collaboration with the Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa of the City of Venice, organisation that shares with Viafarini some principal goals, among them to address to the younger generations and to offer them regular occasions for confrontation and follow up with what is going on in the international art scene.
The idea is to present a selection of works that highlight different trends in recent video research and emphasise the sliding borders and contamination areas with other means of expression. The project is curated by Milovan Farronato.
More and more often visual artists are invited to film festivals while filmmakers participate in art exhibitions. The film director’s approach is a point of encounter for many artists who conceive their works as film sets in the space and who like directors not only conduct the film but also the viewer’s gaze. Surely then, this video series will include one artist who is able to compete with movies and to produce works intended as full-length films, but also one artist that stages his/her work as an integral and necessary part of a more complex installation: two different ways to be artist/director. In many cases and in different ways, video art also uses painterly means and strategies, thus competing with painting for its chromatic effects, its material suggestion as well as its iconography. Further, some of the latest video art dialogues with the artificial imagery of advertising by adopting a fast pace in cutting and editing, which complies with the format’s rhythm, but empties it of its commercial content.
Video-installations with presentations by international artists
Four exhibitions of four internationally known artists to document the different approaches of recent video art: Hans Op de Beeck (Belgium), Bjørn Melhus (Germany), Tobias Collier (Great Britain), Runa Islam(Bangladesh).
