Staging Silence (2)

Hans Op de Beeck achieves a balancing act between the different artistic disciplines. He makes competent use of strategies for orchestrating architecture, stage sets, films, design and the fine arts. In this way he creates atmospherically charged scenarios in which he includes his viewers. In his black-and-white film Staging Silence (2) he shows two anonymous pairs of hands constructing ever new spaces over an area of around one square metre. Thus, water bottles, sugar cubes and potatoes are transformed, in a few short movements, into modern interiors, Japanese gardens and even entire cities, which, with the right lighting, can be staged realistically. In combination with the accompanying bass-heavy electronic sound composed by British musician Scanner, the film develops its own dynamics in its sequence of images and remains fascinating right up until the last moment.
