Landscapes are on the move, their spectators also - passengers, inhabitants, users... Slow movements, almost motionless, fast, sometimes imperceptible or even invisible. Action and contemplation. Regular or usual movements. The constant travelling of sentient beings, mechanical machines has become essential to our own movements control and knowledge of the territories.
Cartographers say the choice of a given scale determines the nature of the information collected. Temporal scaling also brings a deep perceptual and visual field change.
The long time of geology slowly moves apparently motionless mountains. The calm flow of the rivers has always produced human experiences of efforts, overcoming and wide perception of landscape. Less controlled, the rail and motor movements then changed the report in the world and even in places thereafter crossed or even pierced. Time satellite commands around the Earth a ballet of launched gear to nearly 30,000 km/h.
‘Atlas des diéplacements’ offers to explore these real-life lines considering that they are not different ways to cross the same pre-existing landscape: each scale of movement produces different landscapes.
The works and mediums exposed, revealing these tempos associated with variations of scale, will be voluntarily varied: long time painting or sculpture opposes the fast time of the photograph, video or digital devices, the same way that the thoroughness of some markets (household trips recorded by Fernand Deligny) opposes to the allure of some highway maps.
A selection of linear maps, from the 18th to the 21st century, will complete this exploration of ‘Atlas des déplacements’.
