Who are you?

De collectie van de gemeente Schaarbeek kreeg voor het eerst vorm aan het einde van de 19de eeuw, met de bedoeling meer mensen te laten meegenieten van de prachtige werken van de talloze kunstenaars op zijn uitgestrekte grondgebied. De tentoonstelling Who are you? belicht deze portretten.
La Maison des Arts vroeg Myriam Louyest, kunstenares en oprichtster van de biënnale van Edingen, een unieke blik op dit erfgoed te werpen. De selectiemethode was oneindig subjectief en persoonlijk. Ze koos de werken zoals je intuïtief beslist om met een bepaalde persoon en niet met iemand anders te gaan praten. Je richt je tot die persoon en vraagt: Wie bent u? Wie ben jij? (de titel van de tentoonstelling, in het Engels, maakt geen onderscheid tussen u of jij). Je probeert door het gezicht heen te kijken, tast de verschillen af, ontsluiert zijn geheimen, peilt zijn ambities, zijn zwakke plekken … Beslist een afstand te bewaren of net een band aan te knopen.
De erfgoedwerken zijn te bewonderen naast eigentijdse werken die speciaal voor de gelegenheid werden ontleend of soms speciaal ervoor werden gemaakt. La Maison des Arts vult zich met een aanzienlijk aantal creaties, met beeldhouwwerken, schilderijen, tekeningen, gravures, foto’s, video’s en installaties … De commissaris wil dat gevoel van overvloed, waarvan ze zo onder de indruk was toen ze de collectie in de opslagplaats ontdekte, terughalen.
De plaats van het individu in een groep, het beeld van de kindertijd en innerlijkheid zijn slechts enkele thema’s die worden aangeroerd wanneer de verschillende werken in een voorzichtige dialoog tussen de tijdsgeesten nader tot elkaar komen. Grote of vergeten historische figuren, hedendaagse kunstenaars met internationale faam of een carrière in wording maken hun opkomst in de tentoonstelling en vormen een samenhangend geheel, soms grappig of speciaal, soms onthutsend, maar altijd boeiend.

The collection of the Schaerbeek municipality took shape for the first time at the end of the 19th century, with the intention of allowing more people to enjoy the beautiful works of the countless artists on its vast territory. The exhibition Who are you? highlights these portraits.
La Maison des Arts asked Myriam Louyest, artist and founder of the Enghien biennale, to take a unique look at this heritage. The selection method was infinitely subjective and personal. She chose the works as you intuitively decide to talk to a certain person and not to someone else. You address that person and ask: Who are you? Who are you? (the title of the exhibition, in English, does not distinguish between you (formal) or you (informal)). You try to look through the face, explore the differences, reveal his secrets, gauge his ambitions, his weak spots ... Decide to keep a distance or just to tie a band.
The heritage works can be admired alongside contemporary works that were borrowed especially for the occasion or were sometimes made specially for it. La Maison des Arts fills itself with a considerable number of creations, with sculptures, paintings, drawings, engravings, photos, videos and installations ... The commissioner wants that feeling of abundance, which she was so impressed when she discovered the collection in the warehouse , retrieve.
The place of the individual in a group, the image of childhood and innerness are just a few of the themes that are touched upon when the various works come together in a careful dialogue between the spirits of time. Large or forgotten historical figures, contemporary artists with international fame or a career in the making make their appearance in the exhibition and form a coherent whole, sometimes funny or special, sometimes staggering, but always fascinating.
