Hans Op de Beeck: The Horseman

The State Hermitage Museum presents a work by the celebrated Belgian artist Hans Op de Beeck as part of the annual Sculpture in the Courtyard project.

His oeuvre combines various techniques, art forms and genres, among them sculpture, watercolour, large-scale 3D installations and video art. All of his works stand out for their one-of-a-kind signature manner. The Horseman (2020) epitomises the image of a nomad of the past or a wanderer of today, striving to find his place in this world. The lonely horseman is accompanied by a pet monkey that is holding a parasol above its owner’s head to protect him. Hyperrealistic in form, this sculptural composition is full-size and coloured grey, making the subject look unreal and void of volume.
