Just Like Escher

3 November 2023 - 24 March 2024

Escher In The Palace, The Hague, NL

Impossible objects, masterful metamorphoses and absurd architecture: just a few of M.C. Escher’s favourite subjects, which still feature prominently in our culture today, and in contemporary art. In its major autumn exhibition Just Like Escher, Escher in The Palace will show how they are represented in today’s art. In their work, artists and designers like Damien Hirst, Iris van Herpen, Chris Ofili and Carlijn Kingma quiz each other and challenge the ideas of Escher.

In Just Like Escher, well-known Escher themes like optical illusions, reflection, nature and impossible architecture will come to life through contemporary art. In a thrilling mix of work by over 30 Dutch and international artists, the museum will show how relevant and confrontational Escher’s themes still are, and how his work lives on and evolves in modern culture. Challenging his viewers was what drove M.C. Escher, and challenge is precisely what lies behind the exhibition, as each work enters into a surprising encounter with Escher’s prints.

The participating artists include Damien Hirst, Iris van Herpen, Chris Ofili, Alexander McQueen, Jan Taminiau, Carlijn Kingma, Hans Op de Beeck, Ruri Matsumoto, Koos Breukel, Maria Roosen, Studio Lennarts & De Bruijn, Popel Coumou, Stéphane Couturier, Nazif Lopulissa, Satijn Panyigay, Marwan Bassiouni, Susanna Inglada, Henri Jacobs, Ishraq Zraikat, Helena van der Kraan, Sybren Renema, Gijs Van Vaerenbergh, Jelle Korevaar, Raquel Maulwurf, Stefan Bleekrode and Annemarie Petri.
