‘Location (8)’ is an experiential, sculptural installation. A monumental work in both form and content, it grew out of a particular space in Nieuwpoort (be), a former munitions depot, which formed part of Beaufort 04. The installation is a dark, enigmatic work, with references to the film noir cinema and nocturnal folk rituals. The viewer walks into the half-darkness via a long, black wooden jetty over a dark pool of water that leads to a cone-shaped, curved sitting area over the water. In this volume there is a large central circle with a forest of tall white candles. From their seat, the viewer can watch the play of light in comfort and is immersed in an enchanting soundscape of gentle sounds. Just like ‘Location (7)’ (the installation the artist exhibited during the 54th Venice Biennale 2011), ‘Location (8)’ forms part of the series Locations, which Op de Beeck has steadily been working on for twelve years, in between his other projects.
