The work ‘Sunflowers’ shows us a collection of four life-size sunflowers on a round pedestal, depicted in four different stages, from the young flower to the final, wilted one. The symbolism of the sunflower encompasses positivity, strength, zest for life, and devotion, due to its habit of following the light. Op de Beeck has fossilised and decolourised the flowers causing them to appear as a somewhat alienated, gloomy afterimage of the vitality they usually represent.
