Celebration Video, 2008. 4’38” Colour, Sound, Full HD Video transferred to Blu‑Ray
Shot in Arizona, the video 'Celebration' chronicles a scene of an elaborate, formal buffet improbably staged in an arid and mountainous desert; imposing rock formations and cacti provide the backdrop and the set is attended by a retinue of silver service staff, waiting in anticipation of the impending celebration. Everything is ready for the festivities to begin, yet somehow they never do.
The camera angle remains fixed throughout, recalling the simple recording techniques of early cinema. Despite the diversion provided by the liminal action – the fluttering cloth covering the banqueting table - the passage of time is palpable, felt as a density, always in the expectation that something might happen. Indeed we perceive time as a felt, material presence in the works – unleavened, uninterrupted time as a material state.
