AN AESTHETIC AND PHILOSOPHICAL MANIFESTO BY TWO CONTEMPORARY ‘FLEMISH MASTERS’

In this new production, the choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and the visual artist Hans Op de Beeck find inspiration in the economically and culturally thriving Flanders of the fifteenth century, a time when the region’s fame owed much to the arts. The much-travelled fiamminghi, as Flemish artists were called, were seen as innovative, free spirits who refused to be constrained by traditional boundaries. The striking parallels between them and their successors today and their shared willingness to experiment inspired Cherkaoui and Op de Beeck to investigate the pluralistic identity that emerged from that melting pot of influences and to seek to sow the seeds of a new Renaissance. The result is an aesthetic and philosophical manifesto by two contemporary ‘Flemish masters’, for which La Monnaie and the KVS have joined forces within the Troika framework.
