Triënnale Brugge 2021 haalt met TraumA twaalf nationale en internationale kunstenaars naar Brugge

The word is out! Van 8 mei tot en met 26 september 2021 wordt Brugge opnieuw gaststad voor hedendaagse kunst en architectuur. Deze 3e editie brengt opnieuw het grote publiek naar de historische binnenstad waar twaalf nationale en internationale kunstenaars en architecten hun tijdelijke installaties voorstellen.

Dit jaar slaat Triënnale een nieuwe weg in en kiezen we voor het thema TraumA. Deze editie balanceert tussen het aanwezige en het verborgene. Tijdens dit kunstenparcours brengen we de stad Brugge in al haar facetten aan bod. De kunstenaars en architecten worden uitgenodigd om de verborgen dimensies van de samenleving in vraag te stellen. Historische lagen worden blootgelegd, vergeten verhaallijnen worden besproken. Ze spelen in op de pracht en de praal van de stad maar snijden tegelijk het ‘uncanny’, het verborgene aan.

Voor velen is Brugge een droombestemming, een ogenschijnlijk picture-perfect verhaal, maar Brugge is meer dan dat. Triënnale Brugge 2021 gaat de veelvuldige kant van de stad niet uit de weg, integendeel. aan de hand van artistieke en architecturale ingrepen laten de uitgenodigde kunstenaars deze verschillende kantjes deel worden van de beeldvorming van de stad.

Het curatorial team, bestaande uit Till-Holger Borchert, Santiago De Waele, Michel Dewilde en Els Wuyts selecteerde voor deze editie twaalf kunstenaars en architecten die elk op hun eigen manier invulling zullen geven aan het thema TraumA:

The Bruges Triennial 2021 is bringing twelve national and international artists to Bruges with TraumA

The word is out! From 8 May to 26 September 2021, Bruges will once again be the host city for contemporary art and architecture. This 3rd edition once again brings the general public to the historic city center where twelve national and international artists and architects present their temporary installations.

This year Triennial is taking a new direction and we have opted for the theme TraumA. This edition balances between the present and the hidden. During this arts trail, we showcase the city of Bruges in all its facets. The artists and architects are invited to question the hidden dimensions of society. Historical layers are uncovered, forgotten storylines are discussed. They respond to the splendor of the city but at the same time address the "uncanny", the hidden.

For many, Bruges is a dream destination, an apparently picture-perfect story, but Bruges is more than that. The Bruges Triennial 2021 does not shy away from the diverse side of the city, quite the contrary. By means of artistic and architectural interventions, the invited artists allow these different sides to become part of the image of the city.

The curatorial team, consisting of Till-Holger Borchert, Santiago De Waele, Michel Dewilde and Els Wuyts, selected twelve artists and architects for this edition, each of whom will give substance to the theme TraumA in their own way.
