The sculptural installation of a newly built mega supermarket is activated by light, sound and the projection of an animated video onto its surface. The supermarket appears busy, even though the checkout counters are deserted, and the supermarket shelves are empty. The open roof allows the viewer to look into the inner workings of the space. The video is projected onto the empty shelves and aisles, giving an illusion of a high-tech machine at work. The video-light animation is accompanied by a soundscape of sliding doors and escalators mixed with beeping clinical respirators, computer noise, echoing voices and machinery. This turns the interior of the installation into a micro world reminiscent of the motherboard inside a computer and then, as the animation changes, it transforms into a macro world, like a suburban housing estate.
Created with the support of ABC2004 and Muhka, Antwerp.
Soundscape created in collaboration with Michel Vanderhaeghen. Flash animation created in collaboration with Gert Op de Beeck.
